Transport strike 20 June: a guide to disruption and travel arrangements

The grassroots unions have called a general strike in the public and private sectors, but the inconveniences for those who have to travel begin the night before. In local public transport, the abstention will take place within the locally established guarantee periods

On Friday 20 June, the grassroots unions called a general strike in the public and private sectors. But the inconveniences for those who have to travel by train, plane, or who have to move around the city by metro, tram and bus, or take a boat, start already the night before. The 24-hour stoppage proclaimed by Cub, Sgb and Usb and Si-Cobas for air transport starts at midnight on 19 June and ends at 23.59 on 20 June, for rail transport it starts from 21.00 on 19 June to 20.59 on 20 June, for motorways the protest starts from 22.00 on 19 June to 21.59 on 20 June. For local public transport, maritime transport and ports the abstention from work will take place according to locally determined modalities, respecting the guarantee bands.

The impact in cities of the strike in local public transport

In Milan, Atm has announced that the service on Friday is not guaranteed from 8.45 a.m. to 3 p.m. and after 6 p.m. until the end of the service. The vehicles will operate from opening time until 8.45 a.m. in the morning and in the afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. For the Como-Brunate funicular, the service on Friday 20 June is not guaranteed from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and after 7.30 p.m., until the end of the service.

In the Turin area, Gtt ensures the completion of departures by the end of the guaranteed service bands, which for the urban-suburban service, underground, customer service centres range from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 12 noon to 3 p.m.

In Rome, Atac announces that during the strike, public transport will be guaranteed exclusively during the legal bands: from the start of service at 8.29 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7.59 p.m. In the Roma Capitale area, the strike concerns the entire Atac network and the networks of RomaTpl, Autoservizi Troiani/Sap and Autoservizi Tuscia/Bis. On the Atac network, the strike also concerns connections operated by other sub-contracted operators. On the night of 19 June, the service of night bus lines (lines whose names begin with 'n') will not be guaranteed. Service is guaranteed on the daytime lines that are scheduled to run after midnight and on the nighttime lines 38-44-61-86-170-246-301-451-664-881-916-980 and lines 314, 404 and 444 operated by other operators. On the night of 20 June, service is guaranteed on the entire network from the start of daytime service at 8.29 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7.59 p.m. On the night of 20/21 June, service on the night 'n' bus lines is guaranteed. In Naples Anm informs that the strike will start from 03:01 on 20 June to 03:00 on 21 June. Surface lines (trams, buses, trolleybuses) guaranteed bands dfrom 5:30 to 8:30 and from 17:00 to 20:00. The last departures are made 30 minutes before the start of the strike and resume approximately 30 minutes after the end of the strike.

The effect on Trenitalia and Italo connections

Trenitalia informs that from 9 p.m. on 19 June to 9 p.m. on 20 June 2025, trains may be cancelled or changed due to the strike, which does not include the staff of RFI's Sardinia Circulation Hall and Trenitalia's Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta mobile staff.

For regional transport, the essential services provided in the event of a strike are guaranteed on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The lists of guaranteed services can be consulted on the official Trenitalia timetable. A list of long-distance trains guaranteed in the event of a strike can be consulted on the Trenitalia website. Trade union agitation may result in changes to the service even before it begins and after it ends. Passengers who intend to renounce their journey may request a refund as from the declaration of the strike: up to the departure time of the booked train, for Intercity and Frecce trains; up to midnight of the day before the strike itself, for Regional trains; alternatively they may reschedule their journey, at similar conditions, as soon as possible, according to seat availability.

Italo, in view of the strike proclamation, has published on its website the list of guaranteed trains.

There are 34 flights cancelled by Ita Airways

Ita Airways has cancelled 34 domestic and international flights, 32 of which were scheduled on the day of the strike (the other two were cancelled on 19 and 21 June) . Ita also invites all travellers who have purchased a ticket for the day of the strike to check the status of their flight, before going to the airport, on the ita-airways.com website, in the Flight Info section, or by contacting the travel agency where they purchased their ticket'. Passengers who have purchased an Ita Airways ticket to travel on 20 June, in the event of a cancellation or change in the time of their flight, can change their reservation without penalty or request a refund of their ticket (only if the flight has been cancelled or delayed by five hours or more) no later than 26 June by calling +39 0685960020 from Italy and abroad, or by contacting the travel agency where they purchased their ticket.

Reasons for strike

The strike was called to protest 'against the genocide in Palestine, the supply of weapons to Israel and the absence of concrete action to disassociate itself from the horrible crimes perpetrated by the government of Israel', for the 'severing of diplomatic and trade relations with Israel', against the 'war, the war economy and the increase in military spending, in addition to the 40 billion euro already planned for the current three-year period", for "peace also in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and investments in health, school, transport, welfare whose worsening deepens existing inequalities and poverty", against the measures contained in the Security Decree and deaths at work.
