US energy leaders meet with Mediterranean parliamentarians

“Energy security is now an integral part of economic and geopolitical security. The United States, Europe and the Mediterranean countries have a common interest in strengthening their supply chains, developing new interconnections and creating stable conditions for long-term energy investment,” explained Giulio Centemero, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), following a meeting in Rome with Jarrod Agen, Assistant to the US President and Executive Director of the US National Energy Dominance Council (NEDC), dedicated to strategic cooperation on energy security between the United States, Europe and the Mediterranean.

In light of growing global instability, which is driving up demand for secure and affordable energy sources, the PAM is utilising its network of parliamentary diplomacy to support energy resilience amongst its members. Through dedicated activities and initiatives, notably the PAM’s Marrakech Economic Forum, the Assembly actively promotes cross-border collaboration to stabilise regional energy supplies, reduce utility costs and promote the harmonisation of regulatory frameworks. Given the United States’ growing interest in strengthening transatlantic energy and industrial ties, the PAM acts as a bridge between national parliaments, key industry leaders and regional regulators – such as the Mediterranean Energy Regulators (MEDREG), MED-TSO and the Mediterranean Organisation for Energy and Climate (OMEC).

During the meeting, the prospects for structured cooperation between PAM and NEDC were explored in depth, with particular focus – according to a statement – on the stability of long-term energy investments, critical minerals, energy infrastructure and interconnections, and the strengthening of Western supply chains. “When it comes to energy and strategic raw materials,” concluded Centemero, “autonomy is not built through isolation, but through solid alliances and converging interests. Parliamentary diplomacy can help to bring together institutions, regulators and industry, and to transform this convergence into concrete projects.” Discussions will continue in the United States in the coming weeks, including during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
