Mattarella: ‘I hope for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz’
The hope is for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, not least to prevent the blocking of free trade routes from setting a precedent. This is one of the views shared by Sergio Mattarella with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung during his state visit to Italia.
“We discussed the Strait of Hormuz, and we hope for a resolution and its full reopening, not least to avoid setting a precedent,” he explained, “whereby communities along the coast might exploit the paralysis of the international trade network to the detriment of everyone.”
“We discussed the various crises: Ukraine, the Middle East, Lebanon, Gaza; we talked about support for Ukraine and the need to achieve a just and lasting peace, as well as the impact of these crises on the most vulnerable people.”
Araghchi tells Kallas: ‘US attacks nullify the ceasefire’
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a “firm” condemnation of the “recent US aggression” during a telephone conversation with the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, following the latest military escalation with the US. The US airstrikes on targets in southern Iran represent “a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law”, Araghchi noted, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry in Tehran. These actions, he added, “have nullified the ceasefire”, stressing that the US is “responsible for the dangerous consequences”. Araghchi finally criticised the silence of UN member states in the face of the raids and warned that “global inaction will lead to greater regional and global insecurity”.

Iran: We condemn the attacks by the US terrorist regime
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has “strongly” condemned what it described as “crimes committed by the American terrorist regime” in connection with the large-scale attack carried out against Iran overnight, arguing that responsibility for the “very dangerous” consequences of this escalation lies with the US administration.
In a statement reported by the Iranian media, the ministry stated that the US attacks in recent hours are “illegal and criminal” and constitute a “flagrant violation” of the United Nations Charter and the fundamental principles of international law regarding respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
According to Tehran, the air strikes have also rendered the ceasefire of 19 Farvardin 1405 – corresponding to 8 April 2026 – “effectively meaningless”.

Iran: the region will become a living hell for the United States
The commander of the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has stated that making the Strait of Hormuz unsafe will not go unpunished. “You dare to make the sacred Strait of Hormuz unsafe?! We will turn this region into a hell for you, from all over Iran,” wrote Brigadier General Seyed Majid Mousavi in a social media post quoted by Tasnim. “This is the response to the Americans’ audacity in the region, God willing.” The warning came after the US military carried out a new act of aggression against Iran, writes Tasnim, targeting several cities in the south of the country. In response, the Iranian military high command announced the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital strategic chokepoint through which around a fifth of the world’s oil passes. In a separate statement, the Revolutionary Guards Navy warned that any vessel approaching the strait would be “subject to decisive measures”. It also warned all oil tankers and commercial vessels currently operating in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman not to leave their anchorage areas. Meanwhile, in response to the latest aggression, the aerospace and naval divisions of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) carried out coordinated attacks against 18 US military targets across the region.
