Trump: ‘We will respond to the downing of our helicopter’
US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US military helicopter off the coast of Oman and has announced that there will be a response. “I have just been informed by our great military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache helicopters whilst it was patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote on social media on Tuesday.
“There were two pilots on board; both are safe and sound and have not been injured. Nevertheless, the United States must respond to this attack.”

Tehran: ‘Constant risk to foreign forces near the Strait of Hormuz’
The Iranian armed forces “are on constant alert for any violation of the country’s airspace”, and “foreign forces in the vicinity” of the Islamic Republic’s territory “are at constant risk in the event of human error, accidents or being caught in the crossfire”: stated the Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, posted on X, emphasising that the waters of the Strait of Hormuz “are not international waters”, but are shared “between Iran and Oman”, so “the best solution is for foreign forces to leave as soon as possible”.
Foreign forces in proximity to our territory are at constant risk on account of their own human errors, plain accidents, or potentially being caught in crossfire.

Oil: after 100 days of war, stockpiles are no longer enough

Oil reserves have so far enabled us to avoid the worst in terms of price rises and shortages. But after nearly a hundred days of disrupted supplies from the Persian Gulf, the world has now almost emptied its ‘pantries’: at this rate, the most readily available supplies will soon be exhausted, even if the war were to end shortly, and as we head into summer – a season of high consumption in the northern hemisphere – there is a risk of serious problems.
Crude oil prices could soar, reaching as high as $150 or even $200 a barrel according to some analysts – more than double current levels: a drastic change from the almost surreal calm that currently prevails in the market.

Israel: security sources deny Katz’s warning about Beirut
Despite the threat made by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz that any attack by Hezbollah on northern Israel would be followed by air strikes on the Dahiyeh district of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, Channel 12 reported that security sources claim such a policy was never formally adopted.
According to the television report, sources claim that, despite Katz’s statement, there is currently no directive ordering attacks on Beirut in response to attacks on communities in northern Israel, and that the matter has not been formally included in Israel’s internal deliberations.
The report also added that the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, had warned ministers during a closed-door government meeting held yesterday not to accept new “rules of the game” following the resumption of the ceasefire with Iran.

Donald Trump said he had warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the risk of an escalation of the conflict with Iran during their latest telephone conversation. “I told Bibi that he would do very well to be careful about what he is doing, because he could very soon find himself alone facing Iran,” the US president told Sky News.

Iran, NYT: Nuclear talks – four key points emerge
In the days leading up to the latest escalation of violence in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump’s aides were negotiating with Tehran on four key points of a possible nuclear deal, according to the US newspaper The New York Times. According to US officials and diplomats briefed on the confidential talks, the negotiations covered far broader issues than simply the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to these officials and diplomats, here are the four main points of negotiation for a nuclear deal between the United States and Iran, as reported by The New York Times:
Suspend uranium enrichment - The United States wants Iran to halt enrichment for 20 years; negotiations are focusing on a possible 15-year suspension.
Reducing Iran’s uranium stockpiles - The enriched uranium would be diluted under international supervision, preventing its use for weapons.
Dismantling nuclear facilities - The United States is calling for the closure of the main sites at Natanz, Fordo and Isfahan. Iran may agree to close some sites, but wants to keep at least one facility operational.
Allow unannounced inspections - International inspectors would have broader access to verify compliance, including potentially unannounced inspections.

A US official told Axios that the investigation launched following the downing of the American Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz had been triggered by an Iranian drone. Iran, Vance: ‘In a year’s time, we won’t be talking about the war anymore’
The US Vice-President, JD Vance, has ruled out the possibility that the ongoing conflict with Iran could turn into a protracted military engagement like those in Iraq and Afghanistan. In an interview with USA Today, Vance said he was ‘extremely confident’ that in a year’s time there would be no further talk of US involvement in Iran, let alone for a period of years. According to the Vice-President, Washington will succeed in achieving its objectives and, should diplomatic channels fail, the President has further tools at his disposal to act. ‘As long as we keep this issue anchored to the fundamental mission – preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon – it will not become a quagmire’, Vance said.

The IDF remains on high alert and will act decisively wherever it identifies a threat to Israeli civilians.” This was stated by the IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.

Iran: China calls for concrete action to defuse the situation in the Gulf
Beijing has called on all parties to avoid an escalation of the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran, stressing that military action cannot resolve disputes between nations. “The conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, which has been ongoing for three months, has hit the Gulf states and the entire Middle East region hard,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian in a statement. “At this crucial juncture in the negotiations between Iran and the United States, no one should reignite a military conflict,” he added, “The sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the countries in the region must be respected and safeguarded.” “China calls on the parties concerned to remain calm, exercise restraint, cease any confrontational actions that could exacerbate the escalation of the conflict, take concrete measures to ease tensions, resolve disputes through political and diplomatic means, and work towards the rapid achievement of a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire,” the spokesperson concluded in the statement.

Lebanon: the exodus from Tyre following warnings from Israel
Long convoys of cars laden with mattresses, suitcases and household goods are leaving the Lebanese city of Tyre following the latest warning issued by the Israeli army. Traffic on the coastal motorway has been at a standstill for miles as hundreds of families try to flee the city. The Israeli alert also covers the Christian quarter of Tyre, which has so far been spared from the bombardment. In recent days, Christian religious leaders have called on the international community and the Lebanese authorities to intervene to prevent further attacks and protect the city’s historic centre. Israel claims that members of Hezbollah are operating in the area and has warned that buildings used for military activities could be targeted. In recent weeks, the raids have caused severe destruction in Tyre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Israel’s attacks in Lebanon have so far claimed around 3,500 lives and displaced over 1.2 million people.

New sanctions against Israeli settlers
A new package of measures, coordinated jointly by France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Norway, has been adopted to impose “new sanctions against those responsible for the escalation of settlement activities and violence in the West Bank”. This was announced by the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot. Paris has also banned Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich, four leaders of settler organisations and 21 violent settlers from entering its territory,” Barrot continued, noting that “Bezalel Smotrich actively promotes the annexation of the West Bank, which he openly advocates, the creation of new settlements in the West Bank, the recolonisation of Gaza, the economic collapse of the Palestinian Authority and its disastrous consequences for the Palestinian population”. Barrot emphasises that this is “a policy that the overwhelming majority of the international community, firmly committed to the two-state solution, cannot accept”.
“Israel firmly rejects the shameful measures taken by foreign governments against Israeli citizens, Israeli entities and a government minister,” reads a post on the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s X account. “The true essence of these measures is an attempt to impose a political stance regarding the right of Jews to live in the Land of Israel and regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, disguising it as a measure against violence,” the ministry writes.

Iran: EU has spent 47 billion on energy imports since the start of the war
“The conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are having a terrible and tangible impact on our energy markets. And more generally on our economies, not only in Europe but across the globe. To give a striking example, the EU’s expenditure on fossil fuel imports has risen by over €47 billion in the last 100 days, without a single extra molecule of energy being produced. ‘More than €47 billion in 100 days.’ This was stated by European Commissioner for the Economy Dan Jorgensen as he presented the T-Med initiative to accelerate the development of renewable energy and clean technologies in the Mediterranean. “The current energy crisis,” he added, “is teaching us once again a fundamental lesson: diversifying our sources of fossil fuel supply is not enough to protect us from geopolitical instability and price shocks. Our energy security must be based on electrified energy systems, which in turn rely on clean energy, modern grids and greater connectivity.”

Guterres added that ‘any action that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts must be avoided’. All parties must fulfil their obligations under international law and take all possible precautions to protect civilians’. 'This is the first time they have been forced to leave their homes since the beginning of this wave of violence in March. This led thousands of people to take refuge in that neighbourhood, living in parks and among shops. There is a marina there and people have set up tents or lived in their cars

Can the Houthis really close the Bāb el-Mandeb Strait?
from our correspondent Alberto Magnani

NAIROBI - The pro-Iranian Houthi rebels have returned to threaten Red Sea commercial traffic, threatening new attacks against Israeli boats transiting the route. The warning comes in parallel with Iran's announcements, quoted by local agencies, about the possibility of "including" in the offensives the Bāb el-Mandeb Strait: the 30-kilometre bottleneck that separates the Djibouti coast from that of Yemen and acts as a gateway to the Red Sea itself from the Gulf of Aden. In a communiqué issued yesterday morning, the Houthis proclaimed a "complete and total" ban on Israeli shipping in the Red Sea and announced that they would classify as "legitimate" targets all "enemy" movements in its path. The communiqué revives a threat repeated several times by the militia, affiliated with the so-called Iranian Axis of Resistance and already the protagonists of incursions into the Red Sea between 2023 and 2025. But it is unclear how far the newly re-announced 'blockade' can go.

Lebanon, Hezbollah exponent: we have changed tactics against Israel
Hezbollah has changed tactics in south Lebanon: it is letting Israeli soldiers advance and then striking them when they are most exposed. This was stated by Ali Daher, a member of the Lebanese Shiite movement's political council and responsible for party relations, in an interview published today by Repubblica.
"In the south we have changed tactics: we let them in and hit them in the open. We are ready for a long war, Israel is not,' said Daher, who speaks Italian after graduating in medicine in Padua, Italy, where he lived for ten years.
According to the Hezbollah exponent, the new strategy is different from the one adopted in 2024. "Back then we moved to prevent their advance, and it cost us many deaths: it is the army with the most advanced technology and a powerful air force, stopping it forces you to pay a very high price," he explained. "The tactic this time is a different one. They want to occupy? Let them pay the highest price. We defend ourselves with fewer direct forces to minimise the cost in terms of lives. The Israeli soldiers advance and we attack them. They come in, but we do not allow them to stabilise. So in the south our losses have decreased, and theirs have increased exponentially".
