There are more and more pets in Italian homes, according to the Assalco - Zoomark Report. The growth, and above all the affective role that these life companions have in the hearts of those who look after them, are also well understood by insurance groups, which in recent years have been developing ad hoc policies to manage the unforeseen events that can arise in everyday routines: from damage to third parties, which dogs and cats can sometimes cause, to health problems that need to be managed.
The Ivass investigation
The supply of policies is in fact multiplying and a recent survey by Ivass, the insurance authority that oversees the policy market, surveyed and analysed more than eighty policies offered by 32 companies.
These include 58 policies in which pet covers are combined with other types of risks (56 home and family policies and 2 travel policies), while 23 policies are so-called 'stand-alone' policies, i.e. expressly designed with pet solutions only.
The main covers offered by these policies are the reimbursement or indemnification of veterinary expenses; reimbursement of expenses arising from civil liability for any damage caused to third parties by the animal; assistance services, including travel assistance and coverage of expenses for legal protection, in relation to disputes involving the insured in private life, for facts connected with the ownership and custody of the pet indicated in the policy.
It starts with basic formulas (the cheapest) to which accessory packages can be added (some groups go so far as to pay for the physiotherapist). As always in insurance, basically the protection obtained is a matter of budget.
