Zambia. Among the leopards and ebony forests of South Luangwa National Park

Grassy plains, woodlands and the mighty waters of the Luangwa, with its powerful tributaries, make the national park named after this river a natural paradise in Zambia. Its wildlife, in fact, thrives in unspoilt landscapes where wild dogs, majestic lions and other large mammals such as elephants, buffalo and hippos vie with the leopard for the title of most intriguing animal. In this country, situated in the tropical zone at the northern tip of southern Africa – three times the size of the United Kingdom, with a butterfly-shaped territory – South Luangwa National Park, having been established in 1972, has enabled rangers to preserve the natural habitat well in advance. Norman Carr, one of the pioneers in the protection of the area, was the first to organise walking safaris, which are now increasingly popular.
