Astronomical observatories and walks under the stars in Val d’Ega

It claims the title of gateway to the Dolomites, as well as that (undisputed) of a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Val d’Ega offers a unique way to experience the mountains, combining classic activities amongst mountain pastures and trails with experiences that invite you to look up at one of Italia’s clearest skies, certified by Astronomitaly with its highest ‘Gold’ accreditation. Between San Valentino in Campo and Collepietra, Europe’s first ‘Astrovillage’ has been established – a project that has transformed astronomy into an attraction accessible to all, thanks to the Max Valier Astronomical Observatory, the Peter Anich Solar Observatory, South Tyrol’s only planetarium, and the Path of the Planets – a route stretching over nine kilometres that reproduces the solar system to scale and takes walkers on an imaginary journey through space. Experiencing the mountains of the Val dEga whilst gazing at the stars at unusual times thus becomes the central theme of a programme of activities that includes night-time walks and events dedicated to the summer’s major astronomical phenomena, complemented by guided tours during the full moon and evening and dawn treks on the Catinaccio. For those who prefer to enjoy the mountains in a ‘traditional’ way, there are over 500 kilometres of footpaths, 210 kilometres of mountain bike and e-bike trails, four via ferratas and 17 ski lifts, allowing you to explore the peaks of the Catinaccio, Latemar and Sciliar. Whilst a must-see destination is Lake Carezza, with its waters reflecting the walls of the Latemar (from this summer, the site is manned by a ranger who also acts as a guide for visitors), the valley also offers experiences for geology enthusiasts, such as the Bletterbach Gorge (the ‘Grand Canyon of South Tyrol’) or the Latemar Labyrinth, as well as events like Culturinarika. The perfect base from which to enjoy these experiences is the Hotel Moseralm, a 4-star hotel with a spacious wellness area and a heated swimming pool on the roof of the sauna complex, in the heart of the Carezza ski area.
