From the glacier to the starry skies: South Tyrol’s summer beyond the trails
Valle Aurina, where the mountains embody nature, traditions and community
Its calling card as the perfect mountain destination goes beyond the eighty peaks over three thousand metres that dot the landscape: the Aurina Valley is one of the largest and most unspoilt Alpine areas in South Tyrol, where the pleasure of high-altitude hiking is inextricably linked to life in the valley floor, governed by rhythms and traditions that involve both residents and visitors. Summer thus becomes an opportunity to alternate between trekking, water sports and walks through woods and alpine pastures, alongside events that showcase the identity of this alpine community. Among the most important events is ‘Cucina in strada’, which will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary in 2026. Every Tuesday evening, until 25 August, the centre of Campo Tures is transformed into an open-air food and wine trail, featuring local producers, traditional dishes, live music and family-friendly activities. Tures Castle and the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park Visitor Centre will also remain open for the occasion. In Cadipietra, meanwhile, the International Wood Carving Symposium takes place throughout July, featuring works inspired by Alpine animals by artists from various countries. And then there’s nature, which can be explored on foot along scenic trails, mountain huts, waterfalls, Kneipp trails and family-friendly routes (for younger children, there are also theme parks such as the Klausberg-Flitzer, the JumpPark Klausberg and the Cross Woods on the Speikboden) or by going rafting on the Aurino stream. The Olm Nature Escape fits perfectly into this setting: an eco-aparthotel in Caminata di Tures, designed according to the principles of bio-architecture and characterised by its distinctive circular shape, at the centre of which lies a natural pond that completes the wellness experience. The cuisine at the Prenn restaurant, led by chef Berni Aichner, is an experience within an experience: South Tyrolean culinary tradition interpreted using local ingredients and an approach inspired by the principles of the Slow Food movement.
