From the glacier to the starry skies: South Tyrol’s summer beyond the trails
Museums, parks and luxury wellness at Plan de Corones
For many, the name “Kronplatz” is synonymous with skiing. In summer, however, this corner of the Puster Valley reveals a different side to itself, characterised by walking trails, museums, castles and landscapes that invite you to experience Plan de Corones at a leisurely pace. The ideal starting point is Brunico, a town with an alpine character but a Central European soul, clustered around its historic centre and dominated by its 13th-century castle. From here, the surrounding area offers a wide range of possibilities, from hikes through the Dolomites to cultural centres such as the futuristic Messner Mountain Museum Corones, the Museum Ladin dedicated to Ladin culture, and the Provincial Museum of Customs and Traditions. For lovers of mountain walks and high-altitude cycling, you’ll be spoilt for choice, with a network of trails stretching across three nature parks (Fanes-Senes-Braies, Vedrette di Ries-Aurina and Puez-Odle), iconic destinations such as Lake Braies or Prato Piazza, and lesser-known spots such as the earthen pyramids of Perca. Just a few minutes’ walk from the Riscone ski lifts heading up to Plan de Corones lies the Falkensteiner Hotel Kronplatz, a hotel designed by architect Matteo Thun that stands as a benchmark for high-end South Tyrolean hospitality (it is no coincidence that it is part of The Leading Hotels of the World) characterised by wood, stone, large windows and elegant communal areas. A stay at this hotel centres on the concept of an active yet relaxed holiday, featuring hikes and personalised outdoor activities (cycling tours through the Perca tunnels along the River Rienza or towards Valdaora, the Riva waterfalls and the Croda del Becco, walks amongst the lakes and meadows of Brunico, and Kneipp sessions in Santo Stefano) alongside a culinary offering (at the 7Summit restaurant) that blends South Tyrolean tradition with Mediterranean influences. The hotel’s flagship attraction is the Acquapura Summit Spa, spread over several levels with heated indoor and outdoor pools, a panoramic rooftop pool, saunas, relaxation areas, a 24-hour gym and a 12-metre-high indoor climbing wall.
