Autumn colours amongst villages and wineries in the Barolo and Barbaresco hills
In the Langhe, too, the autumn season is reflected in the vineyards, which have changed colour, creating a mosaic of yellow, gold and copper across the hills. The days between late October and early November are perhaps the best time to appreciate the changing colours of the leaves and admire the beauty of the landscape, alternating visits to the villages with walks amongst the vine rows and making time for stops at the wineries. La Morra is a natural first stop on the journey: from the viewpoint in Piazza Castello, the view takes in the Barolo hills and, on clear days, stretches as far as the Alps. From here, you can continue on to Barolo, where Castello Falletti is home to the WiMu, the Wine Museum, and then on to Castiglione Falletto, another historic town surrounded by vineyards. In Grinzane Cavour, the castle associated with Camillo Benso is home to the Langhe Museum and the Cavour Piedmont Regional Wine Cellar, combining history with wine culture. Moving towards Barbaresco, the village’s medieval tower offers a vantage point over the Tanaro valley and the surrounding hills. From here, you can reach Neive, whose historic centre retains a compact layout atop the hill. To get a close-up view of the vineyard-covered landscape, you can walk a section of the ‘Bar to Bar’ route, the hiking trail that links Barbaresco and Barolo through woods and dirt tracks. Autumn also coincides with the white truffle season, and a must-visit event is the Alba International Truffle Fair, taking place at weekends until 6 December in the Cortile della Maddalena, featuring tastings and culinary events.
