From Piedmont to Valtellina: 10 destinations featuring autumn colours, walking trails and traditions

5/11Weekend

Val di Susa, Val Sangone and Val Cenischia: autumn amongst castles, parks and abbeys

In the western part of Piedmont, just beyond Turin, autumn offers the chance to follow ancient trade routes, through woods that are changing colour and places that tell the story of centuries of Alpine history. The Susa Valley, a natural corridor leading to the French mountain passes, is crossed by the Via Francigena and boasts a unique heritage of abbeys, fortifications and villages, perfect for those who enjoy combining walks with cultural visits. The most recognisable monument is the Sacra di San Michele complex, perched on Mount Pirchiriano: built between the 10th and 11th centuries, it dominates the entrance to the valley and offers sweeping views over the plain and the mountains. For those wishing to reach it on foot, the Sentiero dei Principi is one of the best options, though it is advisable to check the route conditions and access points before setting off. Further west, the Abbey of Novalesa, founded in 726, bears witness to the role of monasteries along the Alpine routes, whilst the Fort of Exilles – an imposing defensive structure also linked to the legend of the Man in the Iron Mask – provides the perfect conclusion to this historical itinerary. To immerse yourself in the colours of the season, head to the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Nature Park: trails set off from the vicinity of Monfol, winding through forests of fir, larch and Swiss stone pine, with landscapes that change in character depending on altitude and aspect. In the lower valley, the Avigliana Lakes Nature Park offers a more intimate landscape of lakes, reed beds and riparian vegetation. Those who love discovering off-the-beaten-track places with a strong sense of identity can stop off in Val Cenischia, a side valley branching off the main valley that leads towards Moncenisio, or

in Val Sangone, which is inextricably linked to the harvesting and cooking of porcini mushrooms – the stars of the local culinary tradition and the main autumn food festival, Fungo in Festa (which took place on 11 October this year).
