Among the gold treasures of the Lord of Sipán in Huaca Rajada

Il paesaggio glabro di Sipan

It often happens that one is greeted by an indigenous group wearing costumes, masks, golden headgear, and mimicking the gestures that were customarily made by members of the court of the Lord of Sipán, whose remains were found in the Huaca Rajada, in Lambayeque, an archaeological site in the north of Peru that is rightly considered the greatest find in the history of this country rich in evidence of its glorious past, interrupted by the bloody arrival of the Spaniards. In the Museum of the Royal Tombs built to allow visitors to admire them, glittering gold jewellery and ornaments, silver and precious stone trousseaus, including turquoise, numerous pendants, as well as impressive silver chest ornaments, ceramics and finely decorated objects have been collected, showing how opulent the life the rulers of these lands led, then transferred to the tomb so that even after death they would not have to renounce such comforts. It is precisely the figurants who interpret scenes of that daily life inside and in front of the museum, which can be witnessed practically every day on reaching this site located in the centre of a dry, glacial valley, less than half an hour's drive from the centre of Chiclayo, immersed in a western landscape.
