Between waterfalls and following the river at Gljúfursárfoss

One must take shelter from the spray, yet it is impossible not to take the path leading to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall along the southern coast, often heralded by the appearance of the multicoloured arc of a gigantic rainbow: a special footbridge, wet but safe, wedges itself into the belly of the flood of water, allowing one to admire its fall from its shoulders, while also being deafened by the noise it produces. Contributing to this idyllic natural scenery are the many Icelandic ponies free to eat the blades of grass and gallop in the green expanses around Seljalandsfoss, while above one's head, especially at dusk, one happens to catch a glimpse of the gyrfalcon's trajectory. The next day (the eco-friendly lodges of Seljalandsfoss Horizons allow you to admire numerous wild animals from their windows), a short distance away, the waterfall of Gljúfursárfoss is just as spectacular, tumbling down from the heart of a 45-metre-high rock ridge near the village of Vopnafjörður, along the river Gljúfursá: just following its course for a stretch, which ends in the ocean after forming gorges and canyons, is a very thrilling trekking experience: just as this waterfall of iridescent colours is practically hidden in the belly of the promontory, the rest of the landscape also remains an arcane unveiling to walkers willing to follow the river like dowsers. It is here that Iceland regains that aura of unsolvable mystery of Planet Earth, as the soul of its people is revealed at the end of books set in the land of ice.
