Trekking in the Krafla fantasy zone

Trekking in the Krafla volcanic zone in the north of the country is one of the most exciting and geologically and scenically rich treks. Its name derives from a mountain only 818 metres high, but today it is used to indicate a much larger area, in which cracks appear in the soil, swellings in the earth's surface characterised by a high subsidence that determines the occurrence of chain eruptions. One can, therefore, choose the nine-kilometre-long path from Namaskarð to Leirhnjúkur, practically skirting the ridge of Dalfjall and thus gaining full insight into the geological variety of this volcanic area. The 13-kilometre-long path from Reykjahlíð to Hlíðarfjall and on to Leirhnjúkur will also remain long in the memory for the quality of the minerals in the rocks, the colouring of the gaseous lava ranging from black to red. Even circumnavigating the Viti crater, whose cone is covered by water of a very intense blue colour, conveys the feeling of being in a lunar place. And from up here, every centimetre is covered by a sea of lava that seems endless to the naked eye (you can have lunch at Kaffi Borgir, which also serves fish dishes cooked the Icelandic way, while the Fosshotel Mývatn is an excellent place to stay not far from Lake Mývatn).
