Naturalistic journey in pursuit of literary inspiration
Walking along Svínafellsjökull, Europe's largest glacier
Walking above a frozen tongue is the adventure offered by the discovery of Svínafellsjökull. It is a walk of limited length, but an absolute must in what is considered the largest glacier in Europe, located in the south-eastern part of Iceland, within the Vatnajökull National Park. Well, past the Skaftafell Hotel (it is a good choice where to spend the night and is located along the Ring Road), you park the car rented for the trip at the Reykjavik airport to take the path that leads to this scenery lying in different shades of blue that stretches out like an immense arm on which natural sculptures of very bizarre and irregular shapes miraculously balance: sharp, tapering ridges like gigantic diamonds on which volcanic ash has been deposited like a grey jumper dressing them. With the help of authorised guides, it is possible to go as far as a panoramic hill from which one can enjoy an incomparable view, as well as visit an ice cave. The spectacle that can be enjoyed is truly exceptional and at the same time fragile because Svínafellsjökull is slowly thinning as a result of the unstoppable overheating of the earth's crust.
