The intensity of the Camargue from Saintes-Maries to Arles where the Rhone embraces the Mediterranean

by Laura Dominici

There is an exact moment each year when it is filled with the nomadic people for the pilgrimage of Saint Sara the Black. The mistral wind brings with it the smell of salt and barbecued meat, while the trotting of white horses accompanies the roar of gypsy violins. Participating in this procession, in which the statue of the saint is carried on one's shoulders into the waves, is not only a religious act, but the symbolic beginning of the Mediterranean summer in this land of sand, bulls and marshes.
