The intensity of the Camargue from Saintes-Maries to Arles where the Rhone embraces the Mediterranean
The call of Santa Sara and the wild soul of the Delta
The Feast of St Sara is not just a parade, but a deep connection between faith and identity. Roma, Sinti and Manouche people from all corners of Europe gather in this village of white houses overlooking the waves to honour their patron saint. The highlight is the procession to the sea: the statue of the saint, dressed in sumptuous clothes and jewellery, is carried into the water by the faithful on the shoulders, evoking the legend of her arrival on the French coast. Around the fortified church, the atmosphere is vibrant with gipsy songs and music, interrupted only by the equestrian shows in the arenas. Here, gardians on their iconic white horses demonstrate their skill in handling black bulls in agility challenges that, true to Camargue tradition, never involve killing the animal, transforming the arena into a theatre of grace and strength.
