Cycling without seasons, seven destinations to get excited about cycling in winter
Canary Islands. Eight islands to discover among cliffs, lunar landscapes and volcanoes
More than 900 kilometres, to be covered in eight stages and as many days pedalling over 21,600 metres of positive height gain: the 8 Islands Cycling Challenge is the most iconic and complete way to discover the Canary Islands by bicycle. A journey in stages that crosses all eight pearls of the archipelago, from La Palma to La Graciosa, combining road, mountain bike and gravel cycling.
More than a race, it is a total adventure, designed for trained cyclists, but also a privileged insight into a mosaic of radically different landscapes and environments, concentrated in just a few kilometres: volcanoes, ocean cliffs, pine forests, laurisilva forests, lava deserts, light sand dunes.
Cycling here means going from sea level to altitudes of over 1,500 metres in just a few hours, and each island contributes its own identity to this magic, with enchanting places such as the Garajonay National Park in La Gomera or lonely roads and essential panoramas that are the essence of El Hierro. Tenerife is the queen stage of this trip, with long climbs and descents that revolve around the Teide volcano, while Fuerteventura and Lanzarote offer unique rides through dunes and open spaces, lava flows and striking colour contrasts, like a lunar landscape.
