Cycling without seasons, seven destinations to get excited about cycling in winter
Sardinia. The silent island to explore between sea and granite
It is probably at this time that Sardinia reveals its most authentic face and its great variety of landscapes: open spaces, very few tourists and ideal weather conditions for cycling along the coasts and inland, with white beaches and crystal-clear sea as a constant horizon and the Mediterranean maquis surrounding small villages rich in history.
A central role is played by the Ciclovia della Sardegna, a project that envisages a large cycling ring of about 1,147 kilometres, divided into 19 routes and characterised by numerous sections on dedicated tracks or low-traffic roads. Some sections are already practicable and among the most interesting routes is the Golfo degli Angeli, about 115 kilometres leading from Costa Rei to Capo Spartivento, passing through Villasimius, the Poetto waterfront and the centre of Cagliari. The north of the island is a real journey that leads from Porto Torres or Alghero to Olbia, crossing some of the most spectacular stretches of the Mediterranean: in fact, one pedals among famous beaches such as La Pelosa di Stintino, perched villages such as Castelsardo, jagged cliffs and long stretches of sand. Unmissable stops include the excursion to the Asinara National Park, with its themed cycle routes, and the exploratory bike rides in the Maddalena archipelago, between La Maddalena and Caprera.
And then there is Gallura, with its granite landscapes sculpted by the wind and the sharp contrasts between the fashionable coastline of the Costa Smeralda and the wilder interior, where at a slow pace one enters the heart of vineyards, rural stazzi and villages such as San Pantaleo, Tempio Pausania and Aggius.
