Cycling without seasons, seven destinations to get excited about cycling in winter

Spain. Andalusia and the Costa Blanca, along the Spanish Green Routes

Spagna, Costa Blanca

Thanks to its mild climate (with temperatures between 12 and 20 degrees) and an extraordinary variety of landscapes, southern Spain is one of the best European destinations for cycling in the cold months. Here you can cycle between rural roads with little traffic, hills, high plateaus, Mediterranean valleys and coastlines, coastal plains, wetlands and natural parks, with itineraries suitable for both those seeking quiet rides and those who enjoy more demanding challenges. The Vías Verdes, the Green Routes, are at the heart of the cycling experience on Iberian soil, with over 3,200 km of former railway lines transformed into more than 120 flat and well-marked cycle routes distributed throughout Spain, with very different lengths.

Valencia

The Valencia region and the Costa Blanca (of which Benidorm is the best-equipped bike-friendly centre) are an integral part of this cycling network with around 200 km of routes available. Among the most impressive and historical routes are the famous Camino de Santiago, the Camino del Cid and the Via dell'Argento: the latter follows the ancient Roman road from Seville to Gijón and crosses four regions and 29 municipalities in 12 stages, touching cities of enormous historical value such as Mérida, Cáceres, Salamanca and León. In Andalusia, adventure seekers can also wink at the TransAndalus, a large loop of around 2,000 km to be covered by mountain bike, while along the Mediterranean one encounters stretches of the EuroVelo 8, the cycle route from Cadiz to Athens.
