Exploring Spain along the Vías Verdes by Bicycle
Exploring Spain along the Vías Verdes by Bicycle
Where once trains travelled fast, today we continue to go far, but at a slow pace. Where once there were rails, today one pedals or walks along paths where nature, history and culture intertwine. A new way of sustainable travel proposed by the Vías Verdes of Spain: a network of more than three thousand kilometres of bicycle and pedestrian paths carved out of old disused railway lines. The project, promoted since 1993 by the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles, stems from the initiative to reuse and enhance the historical and cultural heritage of disused Spanish railway lines. The itineraries are distributed throughout Spain and are within everyone's reach; cycling them is an opportunity to discover this country in an authentic way, whether for a short excursion or a trip lasting several days (on the viasverdes.com website you will find a description of each route along with practical information, maps and services). From the rural landscape of Asturias, to the Catalan trails that run between dormant volcanoes, from the valleys that connect the west of Extremadura to the north of Castilla y León, to the Andalusian scenery dotted with olive groves, to the river landscapes of Seville's Sierra Morena Park. A selection of five Vías Verdes, suitable for everyone, to be cycled.
