Exploring Spain along the Vías Verdes by Bicycle
In Andalusia: the Vía Verde del Aceite and the Vía Verde de la Sierra Morena in Seville
A journey into the heart of olive oil culture, among endless expanses of olive trees. The Vía Verde del Aceite (in Spanish 'aceite' means olive oil) is a route of one hundred and twenty-eight kilometres that runs along the old railway line, which once connected Jaén and Puente Genil (Córdoba) and today is the longest Green Route in Andalusia. An ideal route for those seeking an authentic experience in the Andalusian countryside, cycling through the olive groves of the provinces of Jaén and Córdoba until reaching the banks of the Genil river. Along the route you can admire thirteen exceptional metal railway viaducts of the Eiffel school, including those over the Víboras, Guadajoz, Bailón and La Sima rivers. Also worth visiting are the olive variety garden at Alcaudete and the Olive Oil Museum at the Luque station.
One of the most spectacular routes in southern Spain is the Vía Verde de la Sierra Morena de Sevilla, which runs through the centre of the Sierra Morena Natural Park in Seville, passing through four of its villages with a rich cultural heritage, such as Constantina, Cazalla de la Sierra, Alanís and San Nicolás del Puerto. The nineteen-kilometre route, which is also perfect for families, allows one to admire the most attractive elements of the Sierra Morena Natural Park, such as the natural monument Cerro de Hierro, an old open-cast mine located between the municipalities of San Nicolás del Puerto and Constantina, the river beach of San Nicolás del Puerto, and the source of the Huéznar River with its waterfalls. Nature to be observed and listened to, the Vías Verdes are an invitation to slow down and get deeply in touch with some of Spain's most evocative landscapes.
