Ceylon, Sri Lanka or Serendib as the Arabs who knew its serene languor used to say. Whatever you call it, this immense island in the Indian Ocean to the south-east of the Indian Peninsula, a former Dutch and British colony, since 1948 independent within the Commonwealth, inhabited mainly by Sinhalese of Indo-European stock, who came to these latitudes around the 5th century B.C. converting to Buddhism, and to a lesser extent by Tamils, can be the destination of an adventurous exploration, especially at this time of year, still capable of enchantment.
