Forests, beaches and ancient cities: adventurous explorations in Serendipity Sri Lanka
On the coast of Mirissa to swim with blue whales
Now is the ideal time to spend a few days watching blue whales in three locations in the country: Trincomalee in the north-east, Kalpitiya on the north-west coast and especially along the shoreline of Mirissa in the south-west, where they can be observed up close aboard small boats and also on the official ships frequently provided by the Sri Lankan Navy, even encountering Bryde's whales and sperm whales along the way. With Muthu Tours it is also possible to snorkel alongside these ocean creatures. Once the whale-watching adventure is over, it's back to shore to relax on Mirissa's crescent-shaped beach of soft, golden sand, swim in its turquoise waters, watch the fishermen return in their colourful boats laden with fish, or reach the rocky islet of Parrot Rock, which can be accessed at low tide, while Coconut Tree Hill is a small forest dotted with coconut tree stems overlooking the ocean. Equally pleasant is to reach the intimate Secret Beach, a natural alcove where one can be lulled by the swell.
