Carnival time: here are ten cities transformed into an open-air theatre
Ivrea and the legend of Violetta's rebellion
The Ivrea Carnival has its roots in the legend of Violetta, a miller's daughter, who freed the city from the tyranny of the baron by rebelling against the ius primae noctis. The Battle of the Oranges re-enacts this revolt: the teams of orange pickers on foot fight without protection, while the orange pickers on carts, drawn by horses, wear masks and protectors that recall ancient armour. In addition to the
fun, the event is an example of civic participation and fair play: after each 'head-to-head', a handshake enshrines mutual respect. This year, the historic Battle of Oranges returns on Sunday 15 February: the city is transformed into an open-air arena of colour, adrenaline and history. Nine teams of orange pickers on foot and more than 50 cast carts will compete in a fight to the last fruit, re-enacting the historic popular rebellion against tyranny. The day will be a rollercoaster of emotions: squares coloured with oranges and flags, the historical procession with the Vezzosa Mugnaia
and the General, the active involvement of thousands of spectators. An event where history, spectacle and participation come together in an unforgettable experience. Carnival gets into full swing already on Sunday 8 February, with the Penultima: the morning is dedicated to horses and harnessed floats parading along the streets. The day also includes neighbourhood bean festivals, historical rites such as the Riappacificazione, the Alzata degli Abbà, the parade of the Historical Procession, and the Orange Market, offering a complete taste of Eporean tradition and preparing the ground for the Battle of the Oranges.
