Carnival time: here are ten cities transformed into an open-air theatre

11/11Weekend

In Portugal for the Lisbon Carnival

Carnival in Portugal is an explosion of colour, music, tradition and joy that infects everyone, from the historic centres of the big cities to the small villages in the hinterland. This year, from 7 to 18 February, the country prepares to experience days of pure joy with new attractions, spectacular parades and unmissable events. To experience Carnival in all its splendour, it is best to stay at Lisbon's Heritage Hotels, five charming boutique hotels located in the heart of the city, where design, history and comfort come together to offer authentic experiences. From the views of the historic quarters to the typical cuisine, every stay becomes part of the festivities. On festive days, the capital is transformed into a giant open-air stage, where music, lights and masks enliven the streets and squares, creating a magical atmosphere that enchants young and old alike. From 13 to 17 February, the highlight will be the famous 'Carnival of the Villans', a centuries-old tradition that fuses satire, spectacle and folklore. Lisbon's neighbourhoods become unique settings: the Alfama echoes the notes of fado reinterpreted in a carnival key, Bairro Alto explodes with music and improvised dances, while the modern and scenic Parque das Nações hosts events for the whole family and interactive shows. Strolling through the streets of the city, one can encounter figures in eccentric costumes, giant mascots and marching bands that directly involve the audience, turning every corner into a small theatre of merriment.
