Carnival time: here are ten cities transformed into an open-air theatre
Putignano, where papier-mâché becomes living matter
It is one of the oldest in Europe, now in its 632nd edition, and the only one to have a philosophical director. We are talking about the Putignano Carnival, which this year has chosen as its theme 'the paradox', understood as a key to understanding the contradictions of our time. Its origins date back to 1394 and, since then, the thread of tradition has never been broken: rites, gestures and costumes continue to mark the time of the festival, renewing themselves year after year. Through a craft tradition handed down from generation to generation, Carnival transforms papier-mâché into living matter. The parades, the heart of the event, are scheduled for Sunday 1, Saturday 7, Sunday 15 and Tuesday 17 February in the historical centre of Putignano. Eight large allegorical floats will give shape to reflections on highly topical issues, from euthanasia, the touristification of villages to animal exploitation, from ludopathy to disability as an opportunity, up to artificial intelligence, feminicide and the paradox of human existence itself. Guests of the edition will include: Auroro Borealo, BigMama, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Madman, Mammadimerda, Nina Zilli, Renzo Rubino.
The 2026 edition of the Putignano Carnival is part of a path already underway of attention to accessibility and inclusion, strengthening and expanding tools and practices designed to allow everyone to fully enjoy the carnival experience.
