4 ideas for the weekend
Lombardy. Music for every ear on Lake Como
The charm of Lake Como invites visitors to stay on into the evening to enjoy the beauty of the landscape and evenings filled with wonderful music. There are many events on the programme. One of the most eagerly awaited events of Como’s musical summer returns to the beautiful Villa del Grumello. From 15 to 19 July, the historic park overlooking the lakefront will host the ‘Villa del Grumello Jazz Festival’, an international festival conceived and promoted by the Villa del Grumello Association as part of the wider ‘Ecotonalità. Humanities’ project. Villa del Grumello stands on Como’s lakeside promenade, a short distance from the city centre and just a few minutes’ walk away. It lies at the heart of a highly prized urban green space, which, through its centuries-old parks, brings together three historic villas dedicated to cultural, artistic, educational and scientific activities. Set in one of the city’s most evocative locations, where the landscape is a fusion of history, nature and art, there will be four evenings dedicated to the many expressions of contemporary jazz, featuring internationally renowned artists and some of the most influential and innovative voices on the world stage, offering the public a rare opportunity to hear leading figures from the global scene in an intimate, cosy and shared setting. The programme kicks off with Fabrizio Bosso on Wednesday 15 July at 9.00 pm at the Serre del Grumello. Taking place between Bellagio and eleven municipalities around Lake Como and Lecco until 9 August, the Bellagio and Lake Como Festival presents a wide-ranging programme of events (spanning Bellagio and Lezzeno, Magreglio, Menaggio, Torno and Zelbio in the Lecco area, as well as Civate, Dervio, Lecco, Mandello del Lario, Valmadrera and Oliveto Lario in the Lecco area). Aimed at combining artistic excellence, the celebration of cultural heritage and the promotion of the local area, the events will be held in churches, historic villas, foundations and other venues of particular scenic and architectural interest. As every year, the event is organised by the TEMA Association (European Talents for Music and Art) and supported by Bellagio Town Council. Then there is the great classical music of the LacMus International Music Festival, with concerts in Tremezzina running until 19 July. Among the festival venues are the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Succour in Ossuccio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Villa Carlotta; Villa del Balbianello – one of the most visited FAI-protected sites in Italia; the ‘Belle Époque’ gardens of the Grand Hotel Tremezzo; the Lake Como Greenway, Teresio Olivelli Park, the Abbey of San Benedetto in Val Perlana, the exquisite Isola Comacina, the Museo della Barca Lariana, Villa Lario, Villa Melzi d’Eril in Bellagio and Castello Durini in Alzate Brianza.
