Christmas in the hills: places in the Oltrepò Pavese among ancient stones, vineyards and flavours
Medieval atmosphere and authentic flavours in Varzi
It is the beating heart of the Staffora Valley, one of the most evocative and representative villages of the Oltrepò Pavese, and recalls medieval atmospheres in its porticoes, its historic palazzos and its towers of Porta Soprana and Porta Sottana that stand sentinel to the imposing Malaspina Castle. Varzi is not only stone and walls, however, but also flavour and tradition. In fact, one of the gastronomic excellences of the Oltrepò, Salame di Varzi DOP, produced according to an ancient recipe and protected by a specific consortium, is born here. Tasting it in the local shops or cellars in the historic centre, where you can find artisan products, means savouring the history of the valley and its air. In the Advent period, the appointment not to be missed is "Le Vie del Natale" (The Ways of Christmas), which for a whole day transforms the medieval village into a Christmas village amidst lights and decorations, craft stalls and tastings of typical products, food stands and the inevitable arrival of Father Christmas.
