Also in August 2025, a few days after Nancy Lacore, Milton Sands, Rear Admiral in charge of Naval Special Warfare, i.e. the special forces of the Navy, was also removed. For him too, the formula used was 'loss of confidence'. Sands was considered a highly experienced officer, with sensitive missions and strategic assignments behind him. His removal raised questions as to his real motivation: officially, there was talk of operational differences, but in reality it appears to be part of the military purge campaign orchestrated by Hegseth. The decision raised concerns about the future of special operations, which require continuity of command and mutual trust. His exit left a crucial position temporarily vacant, only later replaced by an interim officer. Congressional hearings promised by the Democrats could shed light on possible undue pressure.
