Wendy Noble - Deputy Director, National Security Agency (NSA)
On 4 April 2025, the White House announced the removal of Wendy Noble, Deputy Director of the National Security Agency. A long-time civilian executive at the agency with decades of experience in the field of surveillance and cybersecurity, she was considered a crucial figure in ensuring the agency's stability and day-to-day operations. Her dismissal came along with that of Director Timothy Haugh in a package of removals that shook the NSA to its core. The official reason spoke of the need for 'new leadership', but the absence of transparent explanations fuelled suspicions that political rather than operational reasons were behind it. Noble's departure created a considerable management vacuum at a time of great international pressure on cybersecurity. Former director Paul Nakasone publicly praised his work and emphasised the importance of his role in ensuring stability. The agency had to run for cover by swiftly appointing an interim replacement, but the loss of experience was deemed very serious. Many internal employees reacted with dismay, speaking of an attack on technical professionalism for the sake of political loyalty.
