Nice for living: museums, markets and the Promenade des Anglais

A garden by the sea, from 2021 a Unesco World Heritage Site as the 'winter resort of the Riviera': Nice is one of the many gems of the Côte d'Azur, as well as its most important centre, and it can be experienced by breathing in the sea along the Promenade des Anglais, walking along the avenues of the Jardin Albert I and the fountains of Place Massena, the beating heart of the city, visiting the Castle and wandering aimlessly through the colourful and noisy alleyways of the Vieille Ville (old town), or among the stalls of the Marchè aux fleurs, where many niçois go shopping. Nice is also art and history, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Musée des Beaux Arts Jules Chéret (which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Maurice Denis exhibition until 8 March), the Matisse Museum and the one dedicated to Chagall, the Cathedral of Santa Reparata, the Basilica of Notre Dame de l'Assomption and that of Saint Nicolas, a clear sign of the presence of the Russian tsar at the beginning of the last century, all add to the pleasure of a day in Nice. And then there are the events: the highlight on the calendar is the Carnival, one of the most famous and popular in Europe: the 2026 edition is scheduled from 11 February to 1 March, for the first time in its 200-year history it will be ruled by a woman and the theme of the parade of floats and the traditional battle of the flowers is (not by chance) "Vive La Reine", Viva La Regina, in homage to some heroines who have made history.
