Milan is the city of design, and not only during the week of the Salone. And there are plenty of restaurants, bars and venues in general where you can breathe in the desire to put aesthetic taste and creativity not only on the plate, but also in fittings and furnishings or in cultivating contaminations and collaborations with artists and designers. Without of course making any claim to providing a complete review, here are a few tips for those who want to discover places with this spirit that often, and especially during design week, host exhibitions and installations.

Futurists at Arabesque

.

Inside the Durini Design District, the Arabesque Café hosts the exhibition 'Infinite Multiplications', an installation celebrating the historical advertising posters of the company Scac (Società Cementi Armati Centrifugati), signed by futurists such as Fortunato Depero, Ernesto Giuliano Armani and Riccardo Maroni. In parallel, the exhibition 'Milano, Teatro Magico' transports visitors into a surreal atmosphere, where Depero's characters animate the city in constant movement. At 2 Via Francesco Sforza, the café is a landmark for those seeking a fusion of cuisine, art and design; each month it offers a menu that celebrates seasonality and nature, inspired by the memory book of Chichi Meroni, a Milanese art, fashion and design enthusiast and the restaurant's creator.

Arabesque Cafè

At 48 Via Solferino, the Quadri Bistrot hosts an exhibition by German artist Klaus Prior, who enriches the atmosphere with his evocative works. A perfect combination of gastronomy, art and design for a refined and inspired break.

Yapa's pop up at the former slaughterhouse and light creations at Cordusio

TheYapa restaurant temporarily leaves its historical location (at 34 Viale Monte Nero) and moves to the Ex Macello Stock Exchange area (Viale Molise 62). In this transformed space, the pop-up restaurant and main bar offer an experience where design, gastronomy and mixology intertwine in an unprecedented setting. Every detail, from the plate to the cocktail and right down to the layout of the space, narrates a sensory journey through cultures, ingredients and materials.

The refined Gran Meliá Cordusio during the Mdw will host an installation by Linea Zero, a Veneto-based avant-garde lighting company. On the panoramic terrace overlooking the Duomo, creations in Polilux designed by Federico Calearo - including the Loto, Rose, Globe, Helios and Arena lamps - will come to life in a perfect balance of Italian design and Japanese atmosphere. Recently launched is the "omakase" experience, led by chef Tadayoshi Motoa, brand chef of Sachi London and Milan, already a Michelin star with the Toki restaurant in Madrid. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, only eight guests will be able to sit at the counter to experience an authentic journey into the purest Japanese cuisine, according to the Washoku philosophy and with freshly selected ingredients.

Linfa for Visionnaire

.

Experimentation and innovation are at the heart of the collaboration between the design brand Visionnaire and the restaurant Linfa - a Via Bergognone sign pioneering in offering vegan, gluten-free and intolerance-friendly cuisine. A new permanent space has recently been inaugurated inside the Visionnaire showroom in Piazza Cavour 3, which develops into an emotional and sensorial environment inspired by "the journey to Agarthi, a journey into hidden beauty and enlightenment".

Linfa da Visionnaire

The space combines natural elements and material textures: travertine flooring, Emerald Light quartzite stairs and steel accents. Surfaces in Mocha Mousse - the Pantone colour of the year - express a whispering elegance and interact with the other elements of the place, such as the 18-metre-long bar counter and machined glass tables.

Autem and Paola Paronetto

Design Week is also the occasion for the launch of the collaboration between chef Luca Natalini of Autem* and artist Paola Paronetto, who has created exclusively for the Tuscan chef's minimalist and elegant restaurant based in Porta Romana the work of the same name "Autem*", on display until the end of April. The meeting between Luca Natalini and Paola Paronetto, say the two "stems from a common vision, from the sensitivity and passion of both for art and nature that becomes a source of great inspiration".

Autem di Paola Paronetto

Luca Natalini - who pays special attention to sustainability, circularity and the seasonal quality of raw materials - defines cooking as the highest form of creative expression, through which to explore and cross the boundaries of taste and art. Paola Paronetto creates works inspired by the floral world, its colours and its lightness, and expresses her delicate and intimate poetic world, creating symbolic and animated objects, unique pieces on the borderline between art and design, just like the work "Autem", "characterised by an opaque white colouring, fluid and dynamic surfaces in an infinite play of reflections and shadows, which transform over the course of the day, giving different emotions at every glance". The work is also enhanced by the touch of Chef Natalini, who has placed elements of his 'Cucina di Mercato' in it.

New format for Iter looking at the world

The bistro that makes you travel between Italy and the world: after conquering Milan's Navigli with its 'gastronomic airport' spirit, Iter changes format but does not lose its bearings. With the new concept"From Italy to the World", it explores Italian traditions and enriches them with international influences, creating a mix of conviviality, gastronomic culture and a design that is surprising to say the least, combining elements of vintage and modern art.
The offer is structured around five Italian regions (Emilia, Piedmont, Trentino, Apulia, Sicily) and five foreign countries (France, Spain, Poland, Japan, Ireland). Each destination is told through a triptych consisting of a cocktail, a dish and a glass of wine, all designed to dialogue with each other and with those who taste them. The format is dynamic and constantly evolving: the destinations on the menu will change periodically, so as to always guarantee new routes to explore.

EggodiSeppia e Frangente

In the heart of Porta Nuova chef Pino Cuttaia and Vittorio Borgia have created Uovodiseppia Milano, a place designed to tell the story of Sicily today through food, with warmth, authenticity and respect for tradition. A culinary experience that speaks of territory, seasonality and sustainability, where each dish becomes a tale of the island and its truest flavours. The menu reflects this vision, with proposals that enhance the ingredients and respect for the environment.

Federico Sisti, Frangente

At 4 Via Panfilo Castaldi, in the heart of Porta Venezia, Frangente is the restaurant of chef Federico Sisti, who offers an instinctive, contemporary and deeply personal cuisine. Sisti - with experience in kitchens of the calibre of Pont de Ferr, the Michelin-starred Joia and Ratanà - has created a space that reflects his eclectic taste and desire to surprise with bold yet harmonious combinations. The restaurant is intimate, with an open kitchen, and dishes that tell ofan Italy free of clichés, open to contamination and the purest creativity.

The luxury of Portrait and Park Hyatt

.

Ten years after its first opening, Flaviano Capriotti redefines the look and comfort of Mio Lab at the Park Hyatt Milan. Designed in 2015 as one of the city's most exclusive and classy city bars, Capriotti now reinterprets the space with a renewed colour and material palette, updating all the textile upholstery to amplify the perception of comfort and the visual colour spectrum: placing the emphasis on the guests' sensory experience. Capriotti has chosen fabrics produced by Dedar to define a new language of hospitality.

Inside the prestigious Portrait Milano, in the historic complex of the former Archbishop's Seminary between Corso Venezia and Via Sant'Andrea, Beefbar Milano is a location designed by the studio Humbert & Poyet, with the restaurant - listed as one of the 16 most beautiful in the world by the Prix Versailles in 2024 - that combines the elegance of 1960s Milanese cafés with touches of contemporary glamour: walnut wood panelling, Borsani wall sconces, Verde Alpi marble and personalised Bernardaud plates with homages to the Duomo and fashion. In the kitchen, the cosmopolitan concept conceived by Riccardo Giraudi offers a menu of fine meats and luxury comfort food, with iconic dishes such as wagyu and veal meatballs, Milanese-style risotto nikkei or 70% cocoa soufflé.

The Secret Bar

.

New location, same bohemian soul: after years of success in the world of mixology, 1930, one of Italy's most iconic secret bars, changes address but not its vocation for excellence. Leaving its historic premises in Via Pasquale Sottocorno, the club reopens - again 'incognito' - in the basement of the Mag La Pusterla, in Via Edmondo de Amicis. One enters by invitation only, descends a few steps, and finds oneself in a muffled ambience of brick vaults, soft lighting and timeless elegance.

Since 2013 it has been one of the temples of Italian (and international) mixing, also included in the prestigious World's 50 Best Bars list in 2019. Today it continues to amaze with 1930 À La Carte, an innovative menu that combines signature cocktails and haute cuisine, drawing inspiration from flavours and techniques from all over the world. A complete sensory experience, to be enjoyed away from the spotlight. Only the 193 members of the private club can book, while all other customers can go to Mag La Pusterla: if there is availability, they will be accompanied to the tables at 1930, through a mysterious and reserved entrance.

MiArt and Ambassadors of Taste, the exhibition continues

The collaboration between the Ambassadors of Taste and MiArt is now in its third year. The Milan art fair took place from 3 to 6 April, but the partnership with numerous restaurants in the city will continue until the end of the month. During Design Week it will therefore still be possible to admire important works of contemporary art from the Fondazione Fiera Milano in some of the participating restaurants, whose chefs in turn have dedicated a dish-work of art to the event: Roberto Di Pinto of Sine By Di Pinto, Aya Yamamoto of Gastronomia Yamamoto, Cesare Battisti of Ristorante Ratanà, Vittorio Borgia of Bioesserì Brera, Vincenzo and Salvatore Butticè of Ristorante Il Moro, Giancarlo Morelli of Ristorante Morelli and Bulk Mixology Bar. Also involved are Carlo Cracco, Gianluca Fusto and Eugenio Boer.

The closing party

.

Salmon Guru Milano will close its Design Week in style with a closing party that promises sparks on Sunday 13 April. At the console, Vlad Alexandru with a vinyl-only DJ set to keep everyone dancing late into the night. Originally opened in Madrid in 2016 and later landing in Dubai, Salmon Guru has chosen Milan as its new destination and with a design all its own, different for the three main environments, swimming against the current, like the motto that represents them ("We swim against the current like salmon, and that's why we don't serve them!"). The restaurant offers 27 cocktails, mouth-watering tacos and a sparkling atmosphere, where every detail is designed to impress. The first room, with a bar covered in iridescent scales and walls decorated with fantastic animals, leopard-print carpeting and zebra-print sofas; the comic room, with neon lights and comic-themed pop prints; and finally, the intimate Asian room, illuminated by soft lighting and embellished with Chinese parasols and oriental details.

There are of course many more pop and temporary restaurants open for design week, along with numerous food-themed events. Among the most noteworthy are the NonostanteMarras showroom, which hosts the temporary bistrot Famiglia Rana, with Michelin star chef Francesco Sodano. In the courtyard of Antonio Marras's atelier, guests can start the day with a mouth-watering breakfast, choose between à la carte dishes or a tasting menu for lunch, and end with a dinner inspired by Alghero.
