The 250 rare species of the Kamakou Preserve on Molokai Island

For botany enthusiasts, the Kamakou Preserve, on the island of Molokai, is a treasure trove of plant rarities containing as many as 250 species of native Hawaiian plants, close to the summit of the highest mountain in Molokaʻi. It is precisely its almost marginal location and the geographical protection afforded by the hills that surround it that make this reserve a hidden, unspoilt place covering 1134 hectares on the slopes of Kamakou, the island's highest mountain. Two hundred and nineteen species alone find conditions here to survive and to den the holomaʻo called the Molokaʻi thrush and the kākāwahie, the Molokaʻi dragonfly, both considered endangered. Walking the five-kilometre Kamakou boardwalk also means being immersed in the pristine rainforest, always accompanied by Nature Conservancy volunteers. To reach the Kamakou Reserve, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is required. Another destination where you can encounter the purity of primordial nature is the lush Waikolu Valley where you are allowed to camp, waking up among birds and flowers like in Jurassick Park.
