Gallipoli’s facelift, inspired by Palazzo Venneri Lloyd

It boasts the most tender sunset in the whole of Puglia, when a rosy veil spreads out before the lighthouse on the island of Sant’Andrea, colouring the entire horizon until it embraces the silhouette of Calabria. Gallipoli, as its name—which in Greek means ‘beautiful city’—has always suggested, presents a truly captivating palette of soft colours in September: the 1960s architecture of Lido San Giovanni, the pearls that form the jewellery of Baia Verde, the azure of Lido Pizzo, and the fluid, pleasing atmosphere of Punta della Suina constitute timeless and beautiful ‘classics’. A stroll along the ramparts at sunset leads to the A.D. 1517 Lounge Bar, now part of the Boutique Hotel I Bastioni San Domenico, designed in the minimalist yet warm style of Acqua di Puglia, the brand created by architect Massima Brambilla and her unforgettable and talented daughter Silvia: this was once the site of the town’s prisons. The project by the Epoca group is certainly very appealing; they have opened Palazzo Venneri Lloyd to the public in the heart of the historic centre of this maritime island: the rooms of this 16th-century noble residence, which centres around a longitudinal courtyard, have been given a contemporary makeover, featuring delicate colour schemes in the sea-facing rooms whilst preserving the original frescoes and the floral-style decorations on the stone balconies. Having fallen in love with Gallipoli, this family – a branch of the famous line of English insurers – was determined to restore the splendour of the tallest building in the historic centre of this seaside town, from which one can enjoy spectacular views of the sea and the cathedral’s bell tower. The La Vinagrette restaurant also offers stunning views; from its terrace, you can take in the ramparts whilst enjoying fresh seafood every day. The Blanc, a café and lifestyle store where you can also buy clothing, remains a favourite. The 20th-century architecture of the Cinema Teatro Italia and the Tito Schipa will fill those who love truly old-fashioned cinemas with nostalgia.
