On the banks of the Rhine in Eltville 'city of roses'

2/5City Break

The charm of the Kurfürstliche Burg

The heart of this flowering is the castle garden, the Kurfürstliche Burg, a medieval Gothic structure. Its tower houses the Gutenberg Memorial, with an exhibition entirely dedicated to the art of printing, where several times a year practical demonstrations of typesetting and printing are held. On the upper floor, the historical collection offers an interesting insight into the history of the city. The construction of the castle began in 1330. Today, the structure is the undisputed landmark of Eltville and every year serves as an attractive setting for cultural events that attract numerous visitors to the banks of the Rhine. It is worthwhile to reach the castle from the riverside, either by crossing the old moat and passing over the bastion of the old guard walkway or by walking over the characteristic stone bridge. It is here that history meets botany. While visitors admire the tower where Johannes Gutenberg (the father of movable type printing, who received the only official recognition in Eltville during his lifetime) once stayed, their gaze falls on the meticulously tended flower beds. Among them stands out the blütenRhein®, the official city rose christened in 2025, which with its vibrant colour embodies the soul of the riverside.
