La Pigna: the recovery of the ancient heart
For years overshadowed by the splendour of the waterfront, La Pigna is now the symbol of the city's rebirth. It is the medieval quarter, a labyrinth of alleyways perched on the hillside, made up of arches, flights of steps and quiet little squares. Thanks to major urban redevelopment, the village has come back to life: craft workshops and small bistros coexist with votive shrines and ancient fortified gates (such as the Porta di Santo Stefano). Climbing up to the Regina Elena Gardens, one enjoys a breathtaking view that embraces the entire bay, a perfect contrast between the shadows of the carruggi and the blue of the Ligurian Sea. A few months ago, among other things, work was completed on the new Santa Brigida square, which is part of the 'Pinqua' project, financed with Pnrr funds, for which fifteen million euro has been earmarked precisely for the redevelopment of the neighbourhood with some twenty works planned.
