Panoramas, foliage and nature: Autumn experiences in the Alps
Alpine scents and trails from Valfurva to Livigno
Alta Valtellina is best known for skiing, but even in autumn it can offer its visitors scenery and experiences not to be missed in the heart of the Stelvio National Park. One of these is walking along the paths in Val Zebrù, on the way to Santa Caterina Valfurva, among perfectly preserved wooden huts and orange-tinged meadows where it is not uncommon to encounter groups of deer and chamois. Approximately 15 km from Bormio in the direction of Livigno, on the other hand, there are two destinations to be thrilled by the colours of the larches: Val Viola, a flat basin that can be reached from Arnoga, and the Cancano Lakes in the nearby Fraele Valley. Even in Livigno, autumn offers magical atmospheres with snow dusting the highest peaks and the scents of moss and damp earth filling the air. Among the more than 150 km of signposted itineraries, the trails in Val Federia lead to the summit of Carosello 3000 for spectacular views of the entire valley, while those in Val delle Mine, where nature is rougher and wilder, follow the stream that leads to the lake of the same name and to spectacular views of the Bernina range. Directly from the village, you can take a cycle-pedestrian path to reach the silent Val Alpisella, in this season lit up by the golden tones of the vegetation that frames its lake and welcomes the sources of the Adda river. Finally, one of the most scenic routes for those staying in Livigno in autumn is the Crap de la Paré loop, with a 360-degree view of Little Tibet and its mountains.
