Apulia. On the trail of the Waterway

At first glance, one should not be frightened by the overall length of the Apulian Aqueduct Cycle Route, also known as the Waterway. The entire route is no less than 500 kilometres from Caposele in the province of Avellino to Santa Maria di Leuca in the province of Lecce, but it is easy to carve out stretches to match your physical resources because the Waterway is an itinerary with a difficulty level between easy and medium-easy. We recommend the Valle d'Itria route between Cisternino and Ceglie Messapica of about 22 kilometres because it offers a recently completed stretch through the Martina Franca countryside, from Pineta Ulmo to Monte Fellone. Before informing the pedals to visit the historical centre of Cisternino. Along the way you will pass trulli, farmhouses, small churches and the historic hydraulic engineering works of the Apulian Aqueduct.

More generally, the region offers several itineraries accessible to the majority of enthusiasts, such as the one along the coastal road from Lecce to Santa Maria di Leuca via Otranto with stops at the Alimini lakes, the bauxite quarry and the Grotta della Poesia. Equally valid is the Alta Murgia cycle route among masserias, karstic routes, ravines and archaeological sites, while by mountain bike you can tackle the stretch from Gravina to Pulicchio di Gravina and those starting from Castel del Monte, a Unesco world heritage site.
