Seaside walk in Kosterhavet National Park

Almost on the border with Norway lie the islands of Sydkoster and Nordkoster, situated within Kosterhavet, Sweden’s first marine national park. This reserve protects an area of high biodiversity, thanks to the presence of a deep sea trench that supports the life of numerous species. The car-free islands offer walking trails suitable for walkers of all abilities. On Sydkoster, the Naturum Kosterhavet visitor centre showcases the richness of the local ecosystem and provides access to an underwater snorkelling trail, where visitors can explore the seabed by following a series of information panels placed underwater. A regular ferry service connects Sydkoster to Nordkoster, which is characterised by a wilder and more rugged landscape, ideal for solitary walks through heathland and coastal pine forests. Accommodation options are mainly concentrated on Sydkoster, ranging from small hotels and apartments to cottages and campsites. The Koster Islands are easily accessible by boat from Strömstad, which is just under two hours’ journey from Gothenburg.
