On two wheels through Sweden’s Great Lakes region

Lake Vänern is a veritable inland sea, around which the Vänerleden – a 640-kilometre national cycle route – winds its way. Those who prefer a shorter route can focus on the south-eastern shore, starting from the town of Vänersborg, which is easily reached by train from Gothenburg.

The route winds its way through lakeside countryside and villages steeped in history. In Lidköping, known for its well-preserved historic centre, lies the Rörstrand Museum, which celebrates the three centuries of history of the famous porcelain manufacturer of the same name. From Lidköping, a short detour takes you to Spiken, a thriving fishing village renowned for its whitefish caviar, and to the majestic Baroque castle at Läckö, which stands right on the water’s edge. Not far away lies the UNESCO Kinnekulle Biosphere Reserve, an area characterised by deciduous forests and ancient limestone quarries.
