Nature, rituals, colours: a journey into the heart of the Finnish Lakeland
Cruises (with a sauna) on Lake Saimaa
The catchment area of Finland’s largest lake begins at the port of Lappeenranta, and its waters can be explored aboard the historic tarred steamship Prinsessa Armaada. You can also explore Lake Saimaa at a more leisurely pace, in a kayak or a family-friendly rowing boat, both available for hire in the Linnoitusniemi Sandcastle area, whilst numerous cruises head out to the archipelago, the Saimaa Canal and the island of Ilkonsaari. On reaching Imatra, about half an hour’s drive from Lappeenranta, you can enjoy one of the Lakeland’s most unique experiences: sailing on the lake aboard the Sisu Saunalautta, a vessel that can accommodate up to 12 people, where you can enjoy its Finnish sauna followed by a dip in the water (at this time of year the temperature is around 12–15 degrees) and admire the scenery from the spacious panoramic rooftop terrace. Built in 2020, it features comfortable, air-conditioned interiors, a fully equipped kitchen and four berths, and operates from May to October (including evening trips in the height of summer). The tour lasts a minimum of two hours, with prices starting from a total of 420 euros, including the sauna. For those who wish, the Sisu Saunalautta can be hired for private use, without a captain or crew on board, whilst moored at the quay.
