Nature, rituals, colours: a journey into the heart of the Finnish Lakeland

When a (luxury) holiday is all about nature and tranquillity

Nine modern, eco-friendly wooden cottages nestled in the enchanting scenery of Lake Saimaa, around 45 minutes by bus from Savonlinna railway station: a stay at Kanava Resort Villas is an experience that combines comfort, luxury and a truly direct connection with nature. Established in 2023 near the Oravi Canal, this small ‘village’ immerses guests in the atmosphere of the lake and the long, light-filled summer evenings, welcoming guests (with an equal mix of Finnish and international visitors) to twin cottages, all equipped with a fully fitted kitchen, large windows, a small private sauna with panoramic views and spacious living areas both indoors and outdoors. Kanava is open all year round and prices range from 450 to 600 euros for two nights for four people (the peak season is between July and August). Another factor that makes it a secluded spot is the absence of a physical reception: everything is handled online via email (bookings, payments, enquiries, etc.) and a code is used to access the cottage keys. The nearby Oasi Village, a centre for excursions and equipment hire, organises minivan transfers in the summer (by booking) to and from Savonlinna, as well as day trips by taxi boat to Rantasalmi, on the opposite shore of Lake Saimaa, where, in addition to outdoor activities and the sauna, you can dine at the gourmet restaurant Solitary, ranked among the top ten in the whole of Finland. Just a few hundred metres from the resort, however, right on the Oravi Canal, lies the Ruukinranta restaurant, housed in a former steelworks and the perfect spot to sample local fish and game on its spacious summer terrace.
