Nature, rituals, colours: a journey into the heart of the Finnish Lakeland

by Gianni Rusconi

It takes just a few hours by plane from Italia to reach Helsinki: from Milan-Malpensa and Rome, there are two daily non-stop flights operated by Finnair, and from April to the end of October there are also various connecting options from Venice, Bologna, Naples, Verona, Turin, Florence and Catania. But Finland’s capital, which becomes even more appealing in summer thanks to a packed calendar of events, is probably not the ideal destination for first-time visitors to the country. Heading to the Lakeland, the region of lakes that covers a large part of the north-east of the country, the natural surroundings and way of life are decidedly more authentic and unpretentious. We are in Europe’s largest lake district, a landscape made up of thousands of islands and bodies of water, endless forests of birch and conifer trees, lush green meadows and colourful farms. A region that changes with the seasons and can be easily reached via Finnair’s domestic flights to Kajaani, Kuopio and Joensuu, or by train, bus or car.
