The ancient ritual of the smoke sauna

After a long walk through the natural surroundings of Koli National Park, what could be better than a relaxing traditional smoke sauna on the shores of Lake Pielinen, surrounded by lush vegetation and several kilometres from the nearest town? This is the experience on offer at Korvenkota, a facility previously awarded the title of Finland’s best sauna, which was created in 2010 within a small, old wooden cottage. It is run by Asko, who welcomes his guests on arrival in a small wooden hut, warmed by a brazier and lit solely by candlelight, where you can enjoy a cup of tea or hot coffee with crêpes and biscuits. The site, which also features a cottage available for private hire in the summer, has been in his family’s ownership for over 200 years and possesses a magical, enchanting quality that complements the ritual of the smoke sauna and a refreshing dip in the cold waters of the lake just a few metres away. This experience costs 300 euros for five people and transports visitors into the very heart of the Finnish Lakeland.
