Magico Cilento: five stops off the beaten track
Felitto, the medieval fortress in the Calore gorges
The snapshot of Felltto has something poetic about it and goes beyond the mystery that accompanies its name, which according to some interpretations derives from the Greek 'fylittos' (wooded place) and according to others from the Latin 'felix' (fertile and prosperous): a natural fortress suspended above the gorges carved by the Calore river between high limestone walls. In fact, the village stands on a rocky outcrop dominating one of the most spectacular landscapes in Cilento, and over the centuries this privileged position has guaranteed the village protection and strategic value. The medieval castle was a fief of important noble families, including the Sanseverino and Carafa families, and was defended by walls and thirteen watchtowers, many of which are still visible. Strolling through the historical centre, one encounters narrow alleys, arches and stone houses that preserve the medieval urban layout, while the agricultural life of the area is well recounted in the Museum of Rural Civilisation. Just outside the village is the elegant medieval bridge of Magliano, but Felitto's real naturalistic treasure is the Calore Gorge, a canyon shaped by water with natural potholes and stretches of crystal-clear river. Here you can go canoeing or pedalling, or simply walk along the paths that follow the course of the river. For overnight stays in Felitto, one can stay in small family-run establishments in the historic centre (such as Al Vicolo del Cilento or Il Rifugio del Calore), while those who prefer a break in the green surroundings of the Cilento National Park can opt for the agritourism La Dimora del Croccio, in the locality of Remolino. The gastronomic experience, finally, is dominated by the fusillo di Felitto, a long, thin pasta handmade with the traditional ferretto, which is served with a mutton or veal ragout: in August, the village celebrates this speciality with the Sagra del Fusillo, which has been attracting visitors from all over Campania and beyond for over 40 years.
