Magico Cilento: five stops off the beaten track
Monteforte Cilento, amid history and peasant traditions
At the foot of Mount Chianello, amidst limestone walls and forests of oak and chestnut trees, this village retains the authentic character of small inland towns, where life still revolves around family farming and community traditions. The historic centre of Monteforte Cilento is a small treasure chest of 18th-century architecture, and among its alleyways are historic buildings such as Palazzo Gorga and the Palazzo Baronale, as well as the Casa dei Fratelli Capozzoli, figures linked to the Cilento uprisings of 1828. In the heart of the town is also the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, rebuilt in the 18th century and decorated with altars of particular value. Monteforte is above all a place where the journey passes through taste, thanks to a local cuisine based on simple and seasonal products, such as dried figs processed according to tradition (shops such as Lievità and the Antica Panetteria are worth a visit), homemade taralli (on some days it is possible to participate in the preparation of taralli together with the ladies of Monteforte) and the typical Cilento sweet pizza, a dessert that is one of the gastronomic symbols of the village. Staying at agritourisms outside the village (such as Tre Morene and Il Rifugio), you are ready to experience the area by walking on hiking trails through woods and hills that connect the village to the Chianello and Vesole mountains, offering open views of the Calore valley.
