Magico Cilento: five stops off the beaten track
Roccadaspide, the home of the chestnut among chestnut groves and ancient convents
Like the other villages in this magical territory, Roccadaspide dominates the Calore Valley from a rocky spur overlooking the Paestum plain and the Alburni mountains. Its strategic position has made it a true sentinel of the Cilento territory, a role witnessed by the imposing Filomarino Castle that still dominates the town, one of the architectural symbols of the Campania hinterland. Around the fortress is the historic centre, a labyrinth of flights of steps, arches and stone portals leading up to the Church of the Nativity of Mary and the remains of the old Franciscan and Carmelite convents. The village's popularity today is linked to the Marrone di Roccadaspide PGI, an excellence that comes from the centuries-old chestnut groves, a destination for walks and nature trails, especially in the autumn when the chestnut harvest involves the entire community. The Chestnut Festival is dedicated to this product, an event that is experienced with the locals among tastings, popular music and craft markets. Hospitality is widespread and spreads between agritourisms and country houses located in the rural districts of Fonte, Tempalta and Serra and the small family bed and breakfasts in the historic centre. At the table, on the other hand, the local cuisine reflects the encounter between mountain and countryside and sees the chestnut peeping out in numerous preparations (from soups to desserts) alongside grilled meats, goat cheeses and extra virgin olive oil. To complete the gastronomic experience, the wines of the Paestum IGP denomination should not be missing.
