From Cadore to the Tre Cime: autumn colours, traditions and prehistory

At this time of year, one of the Dolomites’ most iconic mountain ranges takes on a different perspective: the lower angle of the sunlight, the woods turning shades of yellow and copper, and, above all, the fewer visitors on the trails give the Tre Cime di Lavaredo a more intimate feel. The starting point for reaching them can be Lake Antorno, at 1,866 metres, from where you can also climb up to Monte Piana and the Cadini di Misurina. A little further down, Lake Misurina offers further vantage points over the peaks, whilst in Auronzo, Lake Santa Caterina can be explored on foot along a flat circular route of around 6 kilometres. Between the two lakes, you can also cycle along the cycle path linking Auronzo to Misurina, a route of just under 22 kilometres with an elevation gain of around 923 metres, passing through the Val d’Ansiei and the Somadida Forest: in autumn, this is one of the recommended experiences for appreciating the landscape through the changing seasons and moods, alternating views of woods and watercourses with contemplative vistas of the peaks not yet covered in snow. In Borca di Cadore, on the other hand, the former Eni Village commissioned by Enrico Mattei serves as a base for exploring a landscape dominated by the peaks of Mount Pelmo and Mount Antelao, and much more besides.
