Events, experiences, thrills: the mountains that don’t close in autumn
The Törggelen experience in the Lana and Tirolo region
In the area around Merano, autumn comes to life in the vineyards, apple orchards and chestnut groves, which change colour and take centre stage during walks and in the traditions linked to the harvest. Starting from Tirolo, for example, you can follow the Wine Trail, a route of around two kilometres that winds through the cultivated slopes and immerses you in the history of local viticulture, leading right up to the gates of Castel Fontana, home to the Museum of Agriculture. Alternatively, the Alta Muta cable car takes you up to the top station at around 1,400 metres, a vantage point overlooking the Adige Valley and the starting point for setting out on the Merano High Route to explore the Tessa Group in stages, or for ascending into the wild natural landscape of the Sopranes Lakes. Tradition thus lives on in the historic farmsteads of Muta (such as Hochmuth, Mittermuth, Talbauer and Untermuth), cradles of rural culture and now popular mountain restaurants, and in the ritual conviviality of Törggelen, which brings the tables of the taverns to life with chestnuts and new wine until mid-November, and the festival featuring music and local culinary specialities in Via del Castello di Tirolo (on 25 October). Heading down to Lana, meanwhile, the art installations and green spaces of the 7 Kränzelhof Gardens in Cermes are well worth a visit (where you can have lunch and dinner at the immaculately maintained miil restaurant and enjoy local specialities at the Essbar bistro) as well as Lebenberg Castle, a 13th-century manor house overlooking vineyards and farmland. To experience the truest essence of autumn, in addition to hikes through the golden larch woods leading to the summit of Monte San Vigilio (at an altitude of 1,814 metres), there are two unmissable experiences: the Chestnut Educational Trail in Foiana, which immerses visitors in the magic of the autumn foliage whilst telling the story of the tree and the role it has played in the lives of local communities, and the Waalwege, the ancient irrigation channel paths, offering a simple and pleasant way to explore the countryside. The Chestnut Days – Keschtnriggl (named after an ancient wooden basket used for peeling roasted chestnuts), taking place from 15 October to 8 November in Lana, Foiana and Tesimo-Prissiano, are an opportunity to transform an agricultural tradition into an event that brings together farmers, local associations and businesses.
